Boynton Primary School

From Little Acorns, Mighty Oaks Grow

Dear Parents/Carers,

Here at Boynton Primary School we have a passion for all learning, but we believe that reading is the foundation to all subjects. It can be gateway into a different realm and a way to travel the world from the comfort of your own home.

The newly adopted phonics scheme, Little Wandle, in EYFS and Key Stage One is having a positive impact within Early Reading and the pupils are showing a great enthusiasm of books. However, we would like to expand the love further and ensure it continues throughout the children’s school journey. We also want them to ‘show off’ their skills and passion at home with you!

Therefore, as a school we are introducing a brand new reading initiative. We are beginning a ‘Rainbow Readers’ challenge. We challenge your child to complete a ‘rainbow’ by reading a certain amount of times. Children who complete the challenge will be rewarded with a treat afternoon at the end of term. For each rainbow segment your child achieves they will receive a certificate in the Sharing Assembly.

Below is the breakdown of the rainbow. Remember, you do not need to read all of the book every time you read, especially in KS2 when the books are longer. You can also read different books or magazines to adults. Adults must comment in the reading records for them to be counted. The class teacher will choose a day to tally up number of reads (this will be shared with individual classes).

Red – 15 reads
Orange – 30 reads
Yellow – 45 reads
Green – 60 reads
Blue – 75 reads
Indigo – 90 reads
Violet – 100 reads

We are very excited about this new challenge and we cannot wait to get started!

As always, thank you for you continued support.

Our Reading Rainbow from Summer 2024 - Most of our children ended up in Outer Space!

As a reward for their achievements, the children enjoyed a movie afternoon with drinks and popcorn, well done everyone!
