At Boynton Primary, we aim for children to become independent and confident readers with a lifelong love of reading.
At Boynton Primary we aim to create life long readers who use their love of reading to escape to new worlds through fiction and non fiction texts. We encourage pupils by using high quality texts and sharing our reading recommendations together, constantly updating our class and school library with texts recommended by pupils, staff, and the wider community.
Guided Reading is taught throughout the school from EYFS to Year 6. These structured session are linked to a class or group reader. Pupils are taught the skills of; Predicting, retrieval, purpose, vocabulary, inference, sequencing, skimming, scanning, identifying fact and opinion, cause and effect, summarising the main idea and comparing and contrasting.
When reading pupils are also taught to use a variety of tools; Predict/ question the information; Link to other experiences and previous reading; Repair words/ phrases that don’t make sense; Look closely at the words and sentence punctuation; Piece the information together until you have the full picture; Visualise what is happening in the text.
We recently refurbished our library area to transform this into an inviting space for pupils. We opened the library this term with KS2 accessing this initially and now KS1/ EYFS.
We are working towards having 'Reading Ambassadors' who will lead reading sessions for the other pupils, to promote our love of reading at Boynton Primary.
Reading with your child
Reading with your child is vital. Research shows that it is one of the most important things you can do to help your child’s education.
Reading is a key skill that enables your child to access the whole curriculum. In school we encourage everyone to discover the pleasure books can give. We explain that books are not just for reading words on a page but that they can present new ideas and topics for us all to discuss and learn from.
Every day in school we ask your children to read in a variety of contexts, for example, to follow instructions, to solve problems, to research or to read for pleasure. In addition, we hear your children read during reading sessions and on an individual basis as appropriate.
We hope that at some point during the week, you and your child manage to find time to share a book and investigate print that surrounds us in our everyday lives. You may like to share a picture book, comic, magazine, poetry book, an information text… the list is endless!
