The Intent and implementation of our Geography curriculum.

Intent

At Boynton, we aim for a high quality geography curriculum which should inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people. We want to ensure all pupils are able to access the National Curriculum and become inquisitive geographers. We want the children to build their understanding of geography and use prior knowledge and skills to deepen their understanding of geographical concepts.

We want to equip pupils with knowledge about their local geography, knowledge about places and people; resources in the environment; physical and human processes; formation and use of landscapes. We also want children to develop geographical skills: collecting and analysing data; using maps, globes, aerial photographs and digital mapping to name and identify countries, continents and oceans; and communicating information in a variety of ways.

We want children to enjoy and love learning about geography by gaining this knowledge and skills, not just through experiences in the classroom, but also through fieldwork and educational visits.

Implementation

Our children are taught to investigate geography using a variety of sources of evidence. Our progression is based on the National Curriculum and tailored to the local context, utilising the geography of Yorkshire and towns such as Bridlington. We also encourage pupils to be proactive in local and global campaigns or issues linked to geography.

Geography is taught through a two year cycle as detailed in our school long-term planning. We develop key geographical skills and knowledge and build upon these each year as detailed in our curriculum progression. The teaching of geography begins within the school and builds through local studies and onto the wider world in order to develop a deeper understanding of scale and context.

We believe the quality of education in geography should be as good as every other subject and strive for excellence. Key concepts such as ‘location, physical and human features, fieldwork, increasing scale, evidence, reliability, cause and effect’ are revisited at key points to ensure children understand how these are related and build on prior knowledge.

We also use valuable experiences such as trips and visitors, application of speaking, reading and writing as well as links should be made to other areas of the curriculum such as art and music.
